Revitalising a Lodge The Members Pathway reinvigorates Hercules

In 2023, Hercules Lodge No 4805 was in critical shape. The Lodge was considering surrendering its warrant due to the twin threats of administrative challenges and declining enthusiasm among members. Matters were further complicated when the Secretary resigned just 14 days after Installation, leaving the Lodge without key leadership. At the request of a Metropolitan Inspector through his Visiting Officer (VO), I stepped in with a brief to turn the situation around.

During my initial conversations with the Brethren, it became clear that morale was low, and many members were contemplating resigning. It is sad that any members in our fraternity should feel this way and I was determined that we should not simply admit defeat.

I discovered a glimmer of hope: Hercules Lodge would reach its centenary in 2026. This milestone became the rallying point for the Lodge’s revival.

 

Steps to Revitalisation

  1. Listening and Communicating

I personally spoke with each Brother, including those who were about to resign and those who had already disengaged. While two members ultimately left due to ill health, eight others decided to stay, inspired by the Lodge’s historic milestone.

To improve communication, we established a WhatsApp group, which fostered a sense of connection and allowed the Brethren to stay in more constant contact and exchange ideas and updates more effectively and regularly.

  1. Building Engagement

We organized a summer social event that further strengthened bonds among the Brethren. This rekindled the sense of fraternity that had been missing.

In our first Zoom meeting, we also took decisive action:

  • Appointing a Membership Officer to drive recruitment.
  • Assigning a Mentor to guide and support members.
  • Agreeing to apply for a centenary certificate to honour the Lodge’s history; recognising the past but also creating a bond around a shared future.
  1. Applying Members’ Pathway Principles

We adopted the New Members’ Pathway framework, focusing on four key elements:

  1. Planning: Identifying the Lodge’s challenges and developing a clear action plan to tackle them proactively.
  2. Attracting: Reaching out to members who were disengaged and encouraging potential joiners.
  3. Engaging: Strengthening communication, organising events, and celebrating milestones to foster enthusiasm.
  1. Retrieving: Reconnecting with Brethren who had drifted away and encouraging their active participation.

 

Building for a brighter future

The transformation has been remarkable. At the April 2023 meeting, only seven Brethren were in attendance. By October, the Lodge saw 14 members present, including three new joiners. Importantly, the Lodge also successfully conducted an initiation ceremony—a key indicator of renewed vibrancy.

Hercules Lodge No 4805 is no longer teetering on the brink of closure. Instead, it is steadily building momentum toward its centenary in 2026, with a renewed sense of purpose and camaraderie among its long-standing and new members.

Their experience underscores the power of Members’ Pathway to revitalize even the most struggling lodges. By focusing on planning, attracting, engaging, and retrieving, Lodges can not only overcome challenges, but thrive. Hercules Lodge No 4805’s journey from near closure to renewed optimism is a testament to what can be achieved with a little dedication, communication, and the Members’ Pathway’s structured approach.
